Osgood as She Gets: The Spectral Inspector, Book III Kindle Edition
Within the mysterious confines of Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood, Prudence Osgood, 45, queer AF, tormented by chronic pain, opioid addiction, and a tempestuous relationship with alcohol, captains The Spectral Inspectors—an ensemble of ghost hunters, each wrestling with their inner ghosts. In "Osgood as She Gets," the third installment of The Spectral Inspector series, a sinister phenomenon known as The Graveyard Game emerges, drawing in fearless teenagers who dare to confront their own mortality by gazing into the hooded statue's eyes. As suicides surge, a chilling question arises: Is this disturbing game to blame, or does it have a connection to the elusive North Side Slasher? With time running out, The Spectral Inspectors must unravel the mystery that threatens their beloved city.
"Osgood as She Gets" delves deep into themes of regret, survivor's guilt, the relentless fight for survival, and the haunting art of letting go. With a tone that balances moments of light-heartedness and warmth with periods of profound introspection and spine-tingling terror, this novel invites you to join Osgood, Audrey, and Zack as they navigate the twisted realms of the supernatural. Can they unearth the truth before the shadows swallow them whole?
Reviewers are calling Osgood as She Gets “A trippy, cosmical joyride grappling with terror, pain, guilt, and bad decisions,” “An engaging and grisly caper,” “deeply chilling, yet profoundly human," and “A haunting, dream-like urban fantasy that stings and satisfies like a bitter-sweet shot of whiskey,” and main character Prudence Osgood “a protagonist for the ages: bold, brash and absolutely captivating,” “a lovable disaster,” and “the bad habit you didn’t know you needed.” They say of writer Beckett that he “writes with the accessibility and charm of Stephen King, but with the queer knowledge and language to appeal to an often-ignored audience.”

About the author
As a queer non-monogamous writer, Cooper S. Beckett endeavors to create characters that reflect the diverse lifestyles of his friends, his partners, and himself. From that mandate, he writes scary, silly, and sexy books and essays. Beginning his writing career as a podcaster as host of the Life on the Swingset Podcast and speaker in the sexuality education community, he wrote My Life on the Swingset, a memoir of his first five years in non-monogamy, then followed that up with two novels that take a brutally honest look at swinging and polyamory, A Life Less Monogamous, and Approaching the Swingularity. Returning to his first love, the horror genre with first Osgood as Gone, and now Osgood Riddance, has been like a homecoming. From a young age, his obsession with horror movies and books seriously concerned his mother. It probably still does. Given a choice, he would rather winter at the Overlook than the Waldorf. Like Lydia Deetz, he has always thought of himself strange and unusual, be it his perspective on sexuality, monogamy, politics, or where Elder Gods ought to fall in the hierarchy.
He lives in Chicago with Elle, his wife, constant, and binary star, Egon, their ghost terrier, and black cat Willow.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2024The teen mortality rate in Chicago is exploding. The media suspect a serial killer is at work but Osgood and her team have found most of the dead teens played The Graveyard Game, a new internet sensation that results in a horrible death for the contestants. The real strength of Osgood as She Gets is the character development. Osgood is a hot mess, too many pills, too much booze, and too many failed relationships. But all of the emotional baggage makes Osgood infinitely more interesting than the average psychic battling a supernatural boogeyman.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2024The story at its core is about a series of murders and suicides amongst teens in Chicago. Mix in a group of spectral inspectors, their emotional trauma, some stunning side characters, and the tormented Osgood, and you’re in for a wild ride. Beckett starts us off with some chaos right off the bat. I love a story that drops you into the action, especially if it gets a little grisly. Once we get to meet Os, it gets even better.
There’s just something about Os, aside from the fact that she died for eight minutes and has battled a lot of demons—chronic pain, guilt, and alcohol to name only a few. Being inside her head gives the book another exciting layer. Os is a no holds barred, blunt character who isn’t afraid to drag you to the depths of Hell alongside her. I loved listening in on her inner thoughts as well as the ones that haunt her.
Aside from teen murders and suicides, there’s an underlying theme to this story about fitting into a group, wanting to be a part of something bigger than yourself, and feeling valued by others. This is touched on numerous times and strengthens the believability of the characters, their intentions, and the interactions between them. One example is The Graveyard Game. It brought back old memories of “Bloody Mary” and things I did as a kid to fit in or share in an experience with my peers. It’s just one of many parts of the book that are relatable when it comes to relationships.
I don’t read a lot of stories in the mystery genre, but there were enough horror and paranormal elements to keep me engaged throughout the book. I did not find anything to be overly frightening, but I did love the scenes where it got a bit gory or I was introduced to an unsavory character. I definitely felt invested in Os and intrigued to learn more about her and her friends. Readers will get the excitement and payoff of chasing down clues and solving the case.
This book has erotic elements. If you aren’t comfortable with bold sexual language or scenes, this might not be the book for you.
On a fun note, I was excited to find artwork throughout the book! It was a pleasant surprise, and I thought it added to the enjoyment of the story.
If you enjoy mysteries, solving cases, emotional characters, and ghosts, check out Osgood as She Gets. It’s well written and packs a punch. Beckett balances out the heavy subject matter with wit and sarcasm. His character Osgood is one of a kind and a real asset to the enjoyment of this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2024“Prudence Osgood, 45, queer AF, tormented by chronic pain, opioid addiction, and a tempestuous relationship with alcohol, captains The Spectral Inspectors—an ensemble of ghost hunters, each wrestling with their inner ghosts.” (Beckett)
The book is set in present-day Chicago where teenagers are dying rapidly and no one can seem to figure out why. Some are committing suicide while across town it appears there’s a serial killer targeting teens as well.
But conventional detective work is failing and that’s where Osgood and her team come in. Some things lurk halfway between life and death. The Spectral Inspectors have dealt in the margins before, and are willing to try again to stop this rash of deaths before anyone else gets hurt.
This book was a lot of fun with an unusual cast of characters and a solid mystery. Often it is one or the other, but Beckett maintains an interesting storyline while developing complex characters. It also is unpredictable in its storyline. You think you are dealing with a graveyard haunting or an urban legend, and suddenly you are down an entire other rabbit hole.
My only gripe with the characters is that the MC is so frequently down-talking herself that it becomes somewhat tedious in the story. In fairness, this is book 3 in the series and I don’t know her history. However, as a reader when every inner dialogue of the character is just about how she is a worthless person it starts to get a little grating and tiring. But this is a minor problem, not worth skipping the book over.
Though this is book 3 in a series, you will not be lost. The story is self-contained, with brief mentions of the characters’ history. Beckett neither skimps on the complexity of the characters nor the solidness of the storyline. It is a successful balancing act, with no part of the novel neglected for another.
But there is a deeper story here too. Much like a coin – heads is a fun story with a Scooby-Doo-like group of investigators. While tails is a deeper reflection on what impact is left when we are gone:
“One can only create so big a divot in the world, and even then, the moment one is removed, the divot begins to shrink.” (Beckett)
We all want to know our lives matter to someone and that when the lights go out, somebody notices the world gets a little darker.
I would highly recommend this book and find myself interested in the first two in the series now, which is an accomplishment in itself. It is a lighter horror, more supernatural, and meant to be scary/creepy. No gore, but some blood. 4 Stars.
Trigger warnings: sex, drugs, (no rock and roll), suicide, and chronic pain/medical conditions.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2024Osgood and the team are back in action. This time, they're investigating in Chicago. It's up to them to find out if it's just a coincidence that all of these people died the same way, or is there some supernatural aspects in play.
Pru is always such a great character, but she was so good in this story! She is always facing some troubles but sypridingly manages to get through each one. Also, how real the struggles are and the mental health aspects make her a very relatable FMC. The ending was a major surprise, and I'm all for it! I completely love this series so far and can't wait for the fourth book.
